Sebastopol Center for the Arts presents, August 22, 2008: INNER LISTENING and ENVIRONMENTAL CLASSICS Seth Montfort and Jerry Green “We can attune ourselves to the music from within when our kinesthetic awareness behind and beneath us equals our attention in front and above. There, within the breath, somewhere in the shifting of weight between right and left, an inner resonance informs and nourishes us at the core.” Jerry Green, Somatic Attunement “Professional musicians sometimes forget why we were originally drawn to music. Jerry’s story and remarkable ability to listen and produce mysterious sounds through original improvisations on popular and classical themes seem to help people rediscover their desire to listen.” Seth Montfort, Russian River Conservatory of Music Watershed, painting by Sandy Eastoak
Seth Montfort: At 15 Seth entered the Denver Symphony's Competition for Young Musicians, won, and made his own concerto debut at 16 performing Ravel‚s jazz-inspired Concerto for the Left Hand with the Denver Symphony. He directs The San Francisco Concerto Orchestra and specializes in Chopin, Gershwin. Seth introduces Jerry and his approach to piano as biofeedback for inner-listening in the concert recording of Arvo Part's Alina and Abraham's Theme from Chariots of Fire by Valgellis that you are listening to now. Jerry Green: Fifteen years ago, Jerry discovered the use of piano as biofeedback training for unwinding spastic tensions associated with congenital cerebral palsy. It was frustration with his physical limitations actually led to improvisational curiosity with simple harmonic fifths, which he then discovered in some new age and then classical themes, enabling him to discover his own musicality and develop unique listening abilities. His once mostly private feedback studies have gained appreciation at Science Buzz Café, contact-improv dance gatherings, and studies in inner-listening at the Russian River Conservatory of Music.
